From the President

As an institution of higher learning with a long and rich history of serving the people of Baltimore and the larger society, it’s in our DNA at the University of Baltimore to know what is happening in education. We must always understand what is needed now – and tomorrow – in the workplace, on the home front, and in the dreams of our incredible students.

In 2019, to best meet those needs, it’s important that we first accept that the idea of the university itself has changed – and it’s not exactly settled on where we’re headed next. Job markets demand new skills all the time; students begin their college experience at very different phases in their lives; they switch careers, live abroad, raise children and care for aging parents simultaneously; discover a hidden talent, and so on. As a result, what happens in the classroom crosses many lines, and encourages our students to think critically while valuing the thoughts and opinions of others from varied backgrounds and life experiences.

At UB, we are meeting and exceeding the students’ expectations and giving them a return on investment that simply cannot be calculated.

If you look at the range of stories we’re presenting in this year’s annual report, you’ll learn about students becoming the face of real estate development in a number of local neighborhoods. You’ll see the enthusiasm of an undergraduate team as they help NASA develop better tools for the exploration of outer space. And, stepping back, you’ll gain insights into what it takes for UB to support all of these people – young and old, passionate, committed – who come to us for an education. A higher education.

Indeed, we are doing what we’ve always done: We take an individual’s desire to learn, and pair that with a practical, applicable set of instructions that is useful for life and career. A UB education allows every individual to continue to grow for years to come.

The expectations of the university of today and tomorrow are changing – we understand that. We’re changing, too. But regardless of what, when, how, or why our students learn, UB is there, a rock on which a satisfying, productive life is built.

Sincerely,

Kurt L. Schmoke
President

From the Board Chair

It has been an honor to serve as Chair of the University of Baltimore Foundation Board of Directors this year and I look forward to watching the University of Baltimore continue to transform in the years to come.

Over the past 50 years, the University of Baltimore Foundation has served to raise and manage philanthropic gifts in support of the University of Baltimore. The Foundation remains dedicated to ensuring the success of UB and the community it serves.

As you will see in the featured videos, there are a number of exciting things happening at the University of Baltimore, many of which have been supported through gifts to the University of Baltimore Foundation. I hope you enjoy learning more about the Real Estate and Economic Development program, the incredible students who were chosen to participate in a competition offered by NASA, as well as the work UB is doing to improve the lives of our students and the Baltimore community.

Our friends and alumni are vital to our success as an institution. On behalf of the University of Baltimore Foundation Board, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported UB this year.

Sincerely,

R. Thomas Crawford, M.B.A. ’91
Chair, UB Foundation Board of Directors
