Welcome to our group projects.

The Situation

In the Afterword of the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”, Skloot discusses the ongoing debates among medical scientists, lawyers, ethicists, and others. Some feel it is the right of every person to have a say-so in how their cells are used or not used for research. Others believe it is everyone’s obligation as members of society to donate (without compensation) their tissues for the good of society because that is how new drugs and treatments are discovered.

The Assignment

As a group take a look at the above situation through the lens of the business discipline that you will be entering, such as accounting, marketing, human resources, information technology, etc.

Identify the code of conduct for the discipline that you are entering. The association that supports your industry creates a Code of Conduct. For example, in marketing you might look at the code of conduct set by the American Marketing Association. For accounting, the CPA designation. For Human Resources, look at SHRM. You will need to do some research to find the appropriate association that supports your chosen discipline. There is at least one for every business discipline out there, sometimes more than one! Each of these will have a Code of Conduct that they expect members to use and follow.

3)   Next identify another situation, case, example, etc., which you can use as a precedent to build arguments for what the right thing to do would be. You can use the work that one or more student has created for his or her Individual Assignment.

Watch the team presentations of their stories.
