EMERGENCY FUNDING<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\"UBalt<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In the spring of 2020, the Student Emergency Assistance Fund was established to provide much-needed financial support to UBalt students as a result of hardship created by the COVID-19 pandemic. In FY21, donors gave a combined total of $375,239 that provided critical assistance to 420 students for needs like housing, utilities, emergency travel, food, healthcare, and remote education expenses, including technology and internet service.<\/p>\n

Additional outside support came from generous funders like The Phillip E. and Carole R. Ratcliffe Foundation, which established a Student Emergency Fund for the Ratcliffe Entrepreneurship Fellows. This allocation ensured the Fellows had access to the support and resources they need to successfully recover from unexpected financial crises, especially due to business closures in the wake of the pandemic. Funds were used to help them continue to support their growing businesses, cover utility bills and mortgage payments, and cover family expenses, like medication, when other sources of financial support disappeared.<\/p>\n

Those inside the University community also rallied support. The Merrick School of Business Annual Fund awarded additional emergency funds for books and equipment to 200 business school students. And the University of Baltimore Foundation allocated a portion of the Fund for Excellence to the Office of Technology Services to support a seamless transition to remote learning for many of our students. This included purchasing additional laptops for student use, building a \u201cvirtual lab\u201d for the Simulation and Game Design program, and extending software licenses for off-campus use by students in UBalt\u2019s design programs.<\/p>\n

Words cannot adequately describe the difference The Bob Parsons Veterans Center<\/strong> has made in my educational career. When I first started law school, I was concerned that I wouldn\u2019t really fit in. I didn\u2019t know what to expect after being out of school for so long, but I\u2019ve thrived at The University of Baltimore. I credit Mr. Josiah Guthland and The Bob Parsons Veterans Center with helping me along. When I needed help, Mr. Guthland went out of his way to help me secure a Student Emergency Assistance Fund grant. The existence of the \u201cArmy Family\u201d is very real, and in that family, we always have each other\u2019s backs and strive to live up to the Army Values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage [LDRSHIP]. I\u2019m proud to say that The Bob Parsons Veterans Center is no different. As a former soldier, I could not be more grateful to have a family of supportive veterans and a place to call home here on our campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

DID YOU KNOW<\/strong> publicly funded grants assist students based on financial need, but those funds aren\u2019t inexhaustible? Private support for students considered \u201cnear-completers\u201d<\/strong><\/em> (those who are around 90% of the way towards finishing their coursework) is an increasingly urgent need. In FY21, eight students received support from alumnus Douglas J. Oliver, B.S.\u201969<\/strong>, through a generous gift given in 2019 to fill financial gaps for UBalt students who otherwise wouldn\u2019t be able to complete their college education. An additional scholarship for near-completers was established by Samuel G. Rose in FY20 and will begin being disbursed in 2022. These vital funds will ensure students do not need to choose between earning their degree and putting that dream on hold.<\/span><\/p>\n

THANK YOU<\/strong> to Samuel G. Rose, LL.B. \u201962<\/strong>, for his generous philanthropy, totaling $7 million, in FY21. Mr. Rose set a single-donor record for cash contributions to the University\u2019s endowment with a $5 million gift by creating the Samuel G. Rose Undergraduate Scholarship Fund for undergraduates and transfer students who need assistance completing their degrees. An additional $2 million was given in March 2021 to establish the Center for Criminal Justice Reform in the School of Law.<\/p>\n

    • Secure 2,296<\/span><\/strong> loans from other libraries and provide 1,552<\/span><\/strong> books and articles to other libraries.<\/li>\n
    • Present 132<\/span><\/strong> Information Literacy sessions.<\/li>\n
    • Scan 2,010<\/span><\/strong> articles and chapters for our reserves.<\/li>\n
