Michael Klein, B.A. \u201976<\/strong>, chairman of Klein Enterprises, (pictured left, in 2013<\/em>) one of the largest management and development companies in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area, died on Oct. 18, 2020. Klein and his family have been dedicated supporters of The University of Baltimore for five decades. In 2013, an endowment from Klein and the Philip and Harriet Klein Foundation established the Klein Family School of Communications Design<\/a> within the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n

Michael and his father Philip Klein, B.S. \u201938, also made generous bequest gifts to the University. Philip began donating in the 1970s and made his first major gift in 1992, establishing the Klein Family Fund to support the English Department. Michael created the Klein Professorship in Writing and Literature with his first major gift in 1997. Michael\u2019s daughter Rachel Klein, B.A. \u201900, is also a graduate, and Daniel Klein, Philip\u2019s grandson, and Michael\u2019s nephew, previously served as a member of the UBalt Foundation Board of Directors, as did Michael.<\/p>\n

The Klein Family Fund contributes to an ongoing reading series<\/a> in the M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts program. And the Michael F. Klein Fellowship in Creative Writing and Social Justice<\/a> is awarded yearly to a student in the program, with the aim of emphasizing the role of the arts in calling attention to issues of social justice and injustice in American society.<\/p>\n

Noelle Ford, a recipient of a 2021 Klein Teaching Assistantship, reflected on how Klein\u2019s legacy impacted her, and future generations of Baltimore students:<\/p>\n

Your endowment has made it possible for me to become a stronger writer and a better educator. During my time in the Klein Family School of Communications Design, I have learned how to listen deeply and to see various perspectives. I do believe that my success is a direct result of this program\u2019s commitment to excellence and community building. I am confident that what I learn at UBalt will directly impact my middle school Baltimore City students and their writing.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
