{"id":618,"date":"2023-02-14T08:15:15","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T08:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/annualreport\/?p=618"},"modified":"2023-03-13T18:24:43","modified_gmt":"2023-03-13T18:24:43","slug":"your-impact-on-community-engagement-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/annualreport\/2023\/02\/14\/your-impact-on-community-engagement-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Impact on Community Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Every gift helps<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><b>SOLIDIFY UBALT&#8217;S COMMITMENT TO<br \/>\nCOMMUNITY SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT.<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #0076a8\">BALTIMORE COMMUNITY CHANGE PROJECT 2010-2020<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Armed with 20 years of community-based data, the <a href=\"https:\/\/bniajfi.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (BNIA) embarked on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/communitychange-bniajfi.hub.arcgis.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>Baltimore Community Change Project 2010-2020<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u201d A clear pattern was identified of neighborhoods diverging apart, creating a dual reality of \u201cTwo Baltimores,\u201d where some neighborhoods are growing and getting numerous resources, but others are not.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-619 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1356\/2023\/02\/bnia-logo-150x150.png\" alt=\"Logo for B N I A reads Baltimore Neighborhood Indicatos Alliance, Jacob France Institute\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1356\/2023\/02\/bnia-logo-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/annualreport\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1356\/2023\/02\/bnia-logo-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>In March 2022, BNIA convened a series of online and in-person engagement activities around these findings with support from the <span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>France-Merrick Foundation<\/strong><\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>Baltimore Community Foundation<\/strong><\/span>, the <span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>Greater Baltimore Committee<\/strong><\/span>, and the <span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>Joseph &amp; Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Events included three nights of virtual neighborhood trivia, a series of webinars from experts responding to BNIA\u2019s summary briefs, and resident and stakeholder facilitated conversations around challenges and opportunities in Baltimore\u2019s communities.<\/p>\n<p>Cheryl Knott, interim director and research manager at BNIA-JFI, shares that <span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><em>\u201cThrough the generous support of our foundation sponsors, the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance \u2013 Jacob France Institute has created this intentional, data-informed roadmap for eliminating disparities in Baltimore. Bogomolny Library\u2019s Special Collections and Archives is conducting an ambitious oral history project. Interviews with alumni, staff, faculty and administrators from across the decades are being conducted, recorded, transcribed, preserved and made accessible online through an ever-expanding digital exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Library\u2019s efforts to recognize and amplify the voices of diverse communities and their histories is reflected in our own archives\u2019 100th Anniversary Oral History Project, anchoring us in past and present UBalt community voices rather than a written narrative,\u201d says Jeffrey Hutson, dean of the Library.<\/p>\n<p>Support from The University of Baltimore Foundation enabled the Library to train and employ two UBalt student assistants, who worked side by side with archivists to realize this public history project. The University of Baltimore, founded in 1925, has undergone many changes since its founding. The University of Baltimore&#8217;s 100th anniversary will be celebrated in 2025, and Special Collections and Archives aims to conduct extensive oral history interviews with faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. This oral history project sheds more light on the history of the University over the past 50 years. It involves interviewing retired employees and faculty, School&#8217;s alumni from every decade over the past 50 years, employees who are about to retire or leave the university, and employees who have worked at the University for many years. Interviewees were selected from a diverse group of people with different responsibilities, duties, ages, backgrounds, and years of service.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0076a8\"><strong>CLINICAL LAW PROGRAM<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Each year, nearly 200 students in the Clinical Law Program at The University of Baltimore School of Law\u2014ranked eighth in the nation by U.S. News &amp; World Report\u2014are licensed to practice law as student attorneys and represent actual clients under the supervision of faculty who are both expert teachers and practicing lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>Donor support for these clinics not only provides law students with unmatched, real-life practical experience, it also directly impacts communities in Baltimore and beyond.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the spring of 2022, the <strong>Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic<\/strong> conducted an outreach event to migrant workers on Maryland\u2019s Eastern Shore who had been taken advantage of previously by a fraudulent tax return preparer.
