Prof. Kendra Kopelke on showcasing writers over 50"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new piece for Erickson Living&#8217;s <em>Tribune<\/em>, associate professor and director of the M.F.A. in Creative Writing &amp; Publishing Arts program, <strong>Kendra Kopelke<\/strong>, talks about supporting and publishing the works of senior writers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/casblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/2017\/02\/KKopelke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-194\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/casblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/381\/2017\/02\/KKopelke.jpg\" alt=\"kkopelke\" width=\"562\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1990, Kopelke was inspired to help launch <em>Passager,\u00a0<\/em>a UB-affiliated journal dedicated to writers over 50<em>,<\/em> because of the impact that her older students had on her as a young professor.\u00a0\u201cWorking with older writers who had so much passion and wisdom changed my life,\u201d Kopelke told the <em>Tribune<\/em>. \u00a0\u201cBeing as young and na\u00efve as I was, they opened my eyes and taught me so many things as a writer. Here I was, their teacher, and I think I was doing the lion\u2019s share of the learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Passager\u00a0<\/em>is still going strong today\u00a0and because of its\u00a0success,\u00a0Kopelke and coeditor Mary Azrael added a book publishing arm in 2005 called Passager Books. Passager Books produces\u00a0anthologies, poetry collections, short fiction and memoirs by authors whose work has appeared in the journal, including the new book\u00a0<em>A Sunday in Purgatory<\/em>\u00a0by centennial poet Henry Morgenthau III.\u00a0The M.F.A. program will host a special reading with Morgenthau on Monday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the UB Student Center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericksonliving.com\/tribune\/articles\/2016\/10\/passager-publishing-focuses-solely-senior-writers\" target=\"_blank\">Read the Tribune article.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/cas\/faculty\/alphabetical-directory\/kendra-kopelke.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Assoc.
