Division of Legal, Ethical and Historical Studies Assistant Professor Joshua Davis<\/strong><\/a> had his book,\u00a0From Head Shops to Whole Foods: The Rise and Fall of Activist Entrepreneurs<\/a>, published\u00a0with Columbia University Press in August.\u00a0Time<\/a><\/em>\u00a0magazine and the\u00a0Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a><\/em>\u00a0have featured the book, and Davis published articles drawing from it in\u00a0Slate<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Washington Post<\/a><\/em>\u00a0this summer.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n photo c\/o Medium.com<\/p><\/div>\n M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts student and Baltimore writer Kondwani Fidel<\/strong> has been making headlines\u2014including the cover<\/a> of Baltimore’s City Paper<\/em>\u2014with his latest piece, \u201cHow a young boy has been decaying in Baltimore since age 10: A Death Note<\/a>.\u201d The viral essay, featured on the self-publishing platform Medium, takes a raw look at the hardships Fidel faced growing up in East Baltimore.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n On the heels of this summer\u2019s highly successful inaugural Philosophy Camp for Teens<\/a> hosted by the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics, center director Fred Guy<\/strong><\/a> has been busy talking and writing about the importance of ethical decision-making and using philosophy to examine our moral code. He even considers the potential benefits of a philosophy camp for adults. Prof. Steven Leyva<\/p><\/div>\n The 2016 \u201cMyth\u201d issue of Little Patuxent Review<\/em>\u2014which is edited by Klein Family School of Communications Design Assistant Professor Steven Leyva<\/strong><\/a>\u2014has been listed as a \u201cNotable Special Issue of 2016\u201d in the The Best American Essays 2017<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n On Oct. 15, Prof. Leyva gave the keynote address at The Inaugural Ron Kuka Prize for Urban Short Fiction. The contest\u2014named in honor of fiction writer Ron Kuka\u2014encourages Baltimore’s young\u00a0writers to continue creating throughout their lives. The October event featured readings by students from Baltimore’s Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Art, and Prof. Leyva said, \u201cI was able to encourage many of these young writers to apply to UB as a way to continue pursuing their craft.”<\/p>\n Students from Baltimore’s Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Art read their original works at The Ron Kuka Prize for Urban Short Fiction event.<\/p><\/div>\n Asst.
