{"id":639,"date":"2016-04-20T14:18:01","date_gmt":"2016-04-20T14:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ubaltlawcfcc.wordpress.com\/?p=639"},"modified":"2016-04-20T14:18:01","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T14:18:01","slug":"urban-child-keynote-speaker-we-are-all-our-brothers-keepers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/cfcc\/2016\/04\/20\/urban-child-keynote-speaker-we-are-all-our-brothers-keepers\/","title":{"rendered":"Urban Child keynote speaker: We are all our brother\u2019s keepers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Hope Keller, Director of Communications<\/p>\n<p>The University of Baltimore\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/centers\/cfcc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts <\/a>held its Eighth Annual Urban Child conference, \u201cEducation and the Urban Child,\u201d on April 7, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speaker<strong> James Cole Jr.,<\/strong> general counsel of the U.S. Department of Education, discussed the importance of taking responsibility for young people, the mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/my-brothers-keeper\" target=\"_blank\">My Brother\u2019s Keeper,<\/a> a presidential task force that seeks to address opportunity gaps faced by young people of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in a sense \u2018kept,\u2019\u201d said Cole, who in January was delegated the duties of the deputy secretary of education. \u201cSomeone took responsibility for me when I was young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup>-grade English teacher, Ms. Schmidt, recognized his talent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had big plans for me,\u201d said Cole, who grew up on the South Side of Chicago and took responsibility for his family at 14 after his mother died and his father began suffering from Alzheimer\u2019s disease. \u201cShe convinced me I have talent, she made me feel smart and created a safe space for learning in a world filled with gang fights and unpaid bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Schmidt not only urged Cole to go to college, but she sent him to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to visit her son for a weekend so he could see that college was an attainable goal.<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, Ms. Schmidt was present when Cole graduated with honors in finance from that university. She was in the audience too when he received his law degree from the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family is all African-American and there was Ms. Schmidt with her red hair,\u201d Cole said. \u201cShe took responsibility for me. Now I\u2019m serving the president of the United States because someone made the choice to be my keeper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole cited statistics that show the problem faced by young people of color: While 43 percent of all young adults in the U.S. have completed a bachelor\u2019s degree, only 25 percent of young black women and 18 percent of young black men have a degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompare that with the odds of incarceration,\u201d Cole said, pointing out that one-third of black men are predicted to go to prison at some time in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Said Cole: \u201cEach of us in this country bears an individual responsibility to our brothers and sisters to truly see kids like the one I was, not to pretend we don\u2019t know where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"See the 2016 Urban Child conference program\" href=\"https:\/\/ublawaccolades.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/04\/see-the-2016-urban-child-conference-program.pdf\">See the 2016 Urban Child conference program<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Hope Keller, Director of Communications The University of Baltimore\u2019s Sayra and Neil Meyerhoff Center for Families, Children and the Courts held its Eighth Annual Urban Child conference, \u201cEducation and the Urban Child,\u201d on April 7, 2016.
