To make it, I\u00a0combined two 3-degree citation network. Both networks started with 2010&#8217;s <em>Padilla v. Kentucky<\/em> as a child. Padilla&#8217;s two network parents were the <em>Chinese Exclusion Case<\/em> (1889) and\u00a0<em>Fong Yue Ting<\/em> (1892). I then filtered this combined two-parent network to opinions containing the word\u00a0&#8220;immigration.&#8221; The resulting map looked like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/home.ubalt.edu\/id86mp66\/14_Padilla_to_FongYueTing.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/cstarger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/273\/2014\/11\/14_Padilla_FongYue_3degree_spaeth.jpg\" alt=\"14_Padilla_FongYue_3degree_spaeth\" width=\"515\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note that this look of the network employs a <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/106531173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spaeth visualization<\/a>. Unfortunately, Spaeth <a href=\"http:\/\/scdb.wustl.edu\/data.php\">only goes back to 1946<\/a>. Many of the cases in immigration doctrine are much older. Thus\u00a0our immigration problem: <em>The y-axis is meaningless for the cases plotted in green<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>First project then is to rehab this map by\u00a0inserting proper vote counts pre-1946. I&#8217;ll have to count\u00a0votes by\u00a0hand. \u00a0Of course, this fix won&#8217;t solve all our immigration problems. But it will help and is a fair first step.
