Luna<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Monday, the Court handed down its second opinion of the 2015 Term, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/15pdf\/14-1143_f20h.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mullenix v. Luna<\/a><\/em>. The map above displays\u00a0the all the Supreme Court cases cited by the per curiam majority opinion as well as by Justice Sotomayor in dissent. (Click on the image to get a full-sized version of the map with links to all the underlying opinions).<\/p>\n<p>In my next post, I will discuss the substantive merits of the decision.<\/p>\n<p>For now, those interested in the technical side of map creation might wish to know the following: \u00a0I made the map in two simple steps. First, I\u00a0instructed\u00a0the software to link the cases cited in <em>Mullenix<\/em> back to either (a)\u00a0<em>Harlow v. Fitzgerald, <\/em>a seminal 1982 immunity case;\u00a0or (b)\u00a0<em>United States v. Place,\u00a0<\/em>an important 1983 4th amendment case. It turns out that this simple heuristic picked up ALL the cases cited by\u00a0<em>Mullenix<\/em> except two &#8212; <em>Reichle v. Howards<\/em> (2012) and <em>Plumhoff v. Rickard<\/em> (2014). \u00a0Second, I added\u00a0<em>Reichle<\/em> and <em>Plumhoff<\/em>\u00a0to the map by hand. One might predict ahead of time that an early-in-the-term per curiam decision would have a relatively simple citation network.
