{"id":148,"date":"2016-01-16T16:15:42","date_gmt":"2016-01-16T16:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/?p=148"},"modified":"2016-01-16T16:15:42","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T16:15:42","slug":"out-ing-myself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/2016\/01\/16\/out-ing-myself\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Out-ing&#8221; myself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the winter break I endeavored to work on a project that had been on my to-do list for more years than I care to count: cleaning out my home office. \u00a0Over dinner one night a few weeks earlier I was chatting with several friends who primarily work from home. \u00a0They were astounded to learn that I typically work from my local grocery store food court when I have an entire room in my home called an &#8220;office&#8221;! \u00a0&#8220;It isn&#8217;t functional,&#8221; I\u00a0revealed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Giant-foodcourt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-149\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Giant-foodcourt.jpg\" alt=\"Giant foodcourt\" width=\"259\" height=\"461\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Giant-waterbottle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-150\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Giant-waterbottle.jpg\" alt=\"Giant waterbottle\" width=\"257\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that was quite true. \u00a0Never a fan of vertical filing and possessing just enough of the hoarding gene to be of danger to myself and others, I had moved all my &#8220;officey&#8221; things into the room when we moved into the house and promptly put blinders on and ignored the entire space. \u00a0I won&#8217;t tell you how long we&#8217;ve lived here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Because the good news is I have finally started to tackle it. \u00a0Only an hour a day, usually 3 or 4 days a week, I have started to chip away at the dusty remnants of my Ph.D. program (who needs 17 drafts of her dissertation when she has one that passed) and appliance service manuals for items we have long ago hauled away!<\/p>\n<p>As to the title of this post, I am not really &#8220;outing&#8221; myself as a reluctant hoarder&#8230;but rather as an activist for women&#8217;s causes, in general, and reproductive rights, in particular. \u00a0In one corner of the room I had stored over a dozen protest signs and posters that I figured could be useful in the future:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/NOW-and-PP-posters1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-155\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/NOW-and-PP-posters1.jpg\" alt=\"NOW and PP posters\" width=\"197\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/NOW-and-PP-posters21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-156\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/NOW-and-PP-posters21.jpg\" alt=\"NOW and PP posters2\" width=\"196\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But I realized that these are vintage posters and I do not &#8220;collect&#8221; things like this. \u00a0For the next protest rally I participate in there are sure to be new logos, new slogans, new chants. \u00a0I can thank these posters for the joy they brought me and recycle them next week. \u00a0I put them here as a permanent reminder of my values and my new-found decision to get rid of what I do not really need.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the winter break I endeavored to work on a project that had been on my to-do list for more years than I care to count: cleaning out my home office. \u00a0Over dinner one night a few weeks earlier I was chatting with several friends who primarily work from home. \u00a0They were astounded to learn [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":501,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/501"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=148"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":157,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/148\/revisions\/157"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=148"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=148"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=148"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
