{"id":158,"date":"2016-01-26T18:47:26","date_gmt":"2016-01-26T18:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/?p=158"},"modified":"2016-01-27T11:41:53","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T11:41:53","slug":"ten-on-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/2016\/01\/26\/ten-on-tuesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Ten on Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t have the time to do a &#8220;Ten on Tuesday&#8221; EVERY Tuesday, but today is a snow day so I&#8217;ll play along. \u00a0Today&#8217;s task is to identify Ten Interesting Things About My Community. \u00a0I had some generous assistance from several websites (thank you Wikipedia and Google Image)!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0I have a &#8220;Gettysburg Address&#8221;! \u00a0Although I&#8217;ll include greater Adams County, PA, as part of my community, the county seat where I live is plenty famous.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Lincoln.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/Lincoln.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln\" width=\"249\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>As a person who doesn&#8217;t really like apples, I am friggin&#8217; SURROUNDED by them (quite literally). \u00a0 The 4th largest apple producer in the country, Adams County is home to more than 35 varieties of the fruit in 20,000 acres of orchard. \u00a0I actually know some Motts.<\/li>\n<li>We are home to the Majestic Theater, the &#8220;grandest small-town theater in America!&#8221; Under the direction of Jeffrey Gabel, it was fully renovated in 2005. \u00a0The earlier version gained notoriety when President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady, Mamie (who were residents of Gettysburg) would attend performances there, often with world leaders as their guests.<\/li>\n<li>Many places are tourist meccas. \u00a0Our tourists are the kind who like to dress up in wool clothing and parade around on the 4th of July (beat THAT, Martha&#8217;s Vineyard!)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_160\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/reenacters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160\" class=\" wp-image-160\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/keyssell\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/348\/2016\/01\/reenacters.jpg\" alt=\"Battle of Gettysburg\" width=\"357\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Battle of Gettysburg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>5.\u00a0Because of that &#8220;civil&#8221; war (I hardly call a war that took the lives of a million people\u00a0<em>civil<\/em>, although it is also known by other <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Names_of_the_American_Civil_War\">names<\/a>, depending upon which side one&#8217;s people were on) my town boasts a lot of ghosts. \u00a0It is quite the booming industry here, in fact. \u00a0My own son took visitors on ghost tours. \u00a0The company he worked for sent the tour guides out with stud finders, which, when turned on and pointed at a ghost, would make unusual optical disturbances. \u00a0(Stud finders also do that when pointed at yogurt shops and living basset hounds, but what do I know!)<\/p>\n<p>6. \u00a0Adams county was named after President John Adams, whose cousin, Samuel Adams, inspired a line of beer. \u00a0 \u00a0People in Adams County love their beer.<\/p>\n<p>7. \u00a0They also love their cult films. \u00a0Jean Stapleton (of<em> All in the Family<\/em> fame) and her husband William Putch lived in nearby Franklin County and ran a summer stock theater that still exists (<a href=\"http:\/\/totempoleplayhouse.org\/\">Totem Pole Playhouse<\/a>). \u00a0Their son, \u00a0John Putch , produced, wrote, and directed a trilogy of films centered on a stretch of the Lincoln highway in south central Pennsylvania: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.route30trilogy.com\/\">Route 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>8. \u00a0The entire county only has five high schools, although there are three institutions of higher learning: Harrisburg Area Community College, Gettysburg College, and the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary.<\/p>\n<p>9. \u00a0The closest Indian restaurant is 40 minutes north of here. \u00a0We cherish our little Thai restaurant and endeavor to keep it open by eating there as frequently\u00a0as possible. \u00a0The grocery store sells sushi (but note that it is <em>grocery store<\/em> sushi!).<\/p>\n<p>10. \u00a0We host lots and lots of small town, community events all year round: the Halloween parade, New Year&#8217;s Eve on the square, Salsa night on the Square, First Friday events in town, concerts at the college and seminary, classic movie night at the Majestic in the summer&#8230; \u00a0I poke a little fun at this town on occasion, but I really love living here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t have the time to do a &#8220;Ten on Tuesday&#8221; EVERY Tuesday, but today is a snow day so I&#8217;ll play along. \u00a0Today&#8217;s task is to identify Ten Interesting Things About My Community. \u00a0I had some generous assistance from several websites (thank you Wikipedia and Google Image)!
