Members of the Houston family attended the event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The first general counsel of the NAACP, Houston exposed the hollowness of the \u201cseparate but equal\u201d doctrine and paved the way for the Supreme Court ruling in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brown v. Board of Education<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, outlawing school segregation. The legal brilliance used to champion other civil rights cases earned Houston the nickname, \u201cThe Man Who Killed Jim Crow.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After serving in the segregated U.S. Army in World War I, Houston returned to the United States in 1919 and enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he was the first Black student elected to the editorial board of the\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Harvard Law Review<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Later, as dean of the Howard University Law School, Houston expanded the part-time program into a full-time curriculum. He also mentored a generation of young Black lawyers, including<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/find-resources\/history-explained\/civil-rights-leaders\/thurgood-marshall\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thurgood Marshall<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ho would go on to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In\u202f March, the law school hosted a virtual celebration for the third book written by\u202f<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/wehle-kimberly.cfm\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Prof. Kim Wehle<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/how-to-think-like-a-lawyer-and-why-kim-wehle?variant=39357039706146\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">How to Think Like a Lawyer \u2014 and Why: A Common-Sense Guide to Everyday Dilemmas<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In this book,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Wehle teaches laypersons how to think like a lawyer to gain advantage in their lives \u2014 whether buying a house, choosing healthcare, or negotiating a salary. She walks readers through the process of breaking down complex issues into manageable pieces for better decision-making.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1674 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/lawmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1270\/2022\/11\/private-prosecution-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/lawmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1270\/2022\/11\/private-prosecution-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/lawmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1270\/2022\/11\/private-prosecution.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/bessler.cfm\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Prof. John Bessler<\/span><\/b><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">published two new books this past year, both of which were discussed at events featuring colleagues in the legal academy. The first,\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cap-press.com\/books\/isbn\/9781531020064\/Private-Prosecution-in-America\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Private Prosecution in America: Its Origins, History, and Unconstitutionality in the Twenty-First Century<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, is the first comprehensive examination of a practice that dates back to the colonial era. Tracking its origins to medieval times and English common law, the book shows how \u201cprivate prosecutors\u201d were once a mainstay of early American criminal procedure. Private prosecutors\u2014acting on their own behalf, as next of kin, or though retained counsel\u2014initiated prosecutions, presented evidence in court, and sought the punishment of offenders.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bessler\u2019s most recent book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/death-penaltys-denial-of-fundamental-human-rights\/AB67A6DAFA64176C3651A435B991F0C8\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Death Penalty\u2019s Denial of Fundamental Human Right<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><\/a><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fcontinues his scholarly exploration of capital punishment as an act of torture and a violation of basic human rights. A previous book on the subject,\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Death Penalty as Torture: From the Dark Ages to Abolition\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Carolina Academic Press, 2017), was a Bronze Medalist in that year\u2019s Independent Publisher Book Awards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-341e92e3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\"
