Existing laws related to vehicles typically assume that key decisions regarding the operation and maintenance of a vehicle are made by a human, and these laws therefore may be poorly suited to governing vehicles that operate autonomously. Such laws threaten to undermine the future adoption of CAV technologies in Maryland.\u00a0<\/p><p>To complicate matters, many diverse areas of law potentially relate to vehicles, including transportation, insurance, criminal, environmental and business law. Wit<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">h the emergence of CAV technologies, some states have revised certain key portions of thei<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">r laws, but this \u201cpatchwork\u201d approach\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">to legal reform can lead to legal inconsistencies, enforcement difficulties, and unintended effects. As such, MDOT SHA and Baltimore Law have launched a comprehensive audit of all Maryland statutes and regulations relevant to automated driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>The team at Baltimore Law is led by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/hubbard.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Prof. Will Hubbard<\/b><\/a>, director of the law school\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/centers\/clipt\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for the Law of Intellectual Property and Technology<\/a>. Three additional professors will spearhead the effort \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/gilman\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Prof. Michele Gilman<\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/modesitt.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Prof. Nancy Modesitt<\/b><\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.ubalt.edu\/faculty\/profiles\/starger.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Prof. Colin Starger<\/b><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 while six law students will support the project as research assistants: <b>Taylor Bayat<\/b>, <b>Michael Blanchard<\/b>, <b>Christian Coward<\/b>, <b>Nyari James<\/b>, <b>Sina Jahanshahi<\/b> and <b>Molly Shaffer<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The project will conclude in February 2022 with recommendations for changes to Maryland laws necessary to pave the way for safely deploying CAV technology in Maryland.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
