{"id":177,"date":"2015-10-22T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2015\/10\/22\/open-access-week\/"},"modified":"2018-07-18T21:28:18","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T21:28:18","slug":"open-access-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2015\/10\/22\/open-access-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Access Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;    &lt;![endif]--><br \/><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;   Normal  0          false  false  false    EN-US  X-NONE  X-NONE                                                                    &lt;![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        &lt;![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]&gt;&lt;![endif]--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The \u201copen access\u201d movement<\/a> is defined by the belief that scholarly research, like journal articles and research studies, ought to be freely accessible to the greatest number of people in order to have maximum possible positive impact.&nbsp; <span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Every day, research is being done that could save or dramatically improve the lives of millions of people around the world, yet gaining access to this research continues to be the exclusive privilege of relatively wealthy people in wealthy countries.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>In order to read most published scholarly research, you need to either 1) be connected to a college, university, or other research institution that pays for <a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/databases\/databases-by-title\/index.cfm\">access to databases<\/a> where you can search for and read scholarly research, or 2) be willing and able to pay <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1023%2FB%3APHEN.0000048935.94012.4e?LI=true\">upwards of $30 for a <i>single article<\/i><\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There is a growing consensus that the economics governing how scholarly research is published are just wrongheaded: researchers, supported by colleges, universities, and sometimes government grants (NIH, NSF, etc.), conduct and publish research which is then sold back, in the form of journal subscriptions at exorbitant prices, to those very same colleges and universities, and the government.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Who profits here?
