While preservation does require that archives are arranged systematically and treated with care, archival materials are not meant to be vaunted and intangible.\u00a0 They are historical primary sources, but communities and individuals make up history, and as such, are deeply connected to what they choose to document and keep. Archives are for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/special-collections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Langsdale Special Collections<\/a>\u2019 own <a href=\"http:\/\/ubvault.tumblr.com\/post\/147359256864\/special-collections-archival-technician-angela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Angela Rodgers-Koukoui<\/a>&#8211;with assistance from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaa.si.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smithsonian<\/a> Audiovisual Archivist and Baltimorean\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mcsheam@si.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Megan McShea<\/a>&#8212;<\/span>is sharing the secrets of archival preservation in Special Collections&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1385273994922480\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Archives workshop (#bemorearchives)<\/a> that will take place for 3 Saturdays in October, part of Baltimore\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freefallbaltimore.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#FreeFall <\/a>program. We had some questions for Angela and Megan about what people can expect, and what the workshop is all about.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"more\"><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">First off, what are community archives?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela: Well, everyone has their own interpretation\u2026.for instance, preservation of community life, and what goes on in the neighborhoods that people reside in. It generally involves preservation of artifacts in a neighborhood or local community, or community involvement. Community archives breaks away from the traditional archival process, and the traditional archival process doesn\u2019t necessarily take the community into consideration.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Megan:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><b>They are when the memory of the community lives on. We want to share our skills and knowledge so that communities can take care of their collections for future generations.\u00a0<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela, can you give us some background information about your experiences working with the community?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela:\u00a0For the last 10 years i\u2019ve run an arts outreach program, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xpressive4everdance.com\/default.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xpressive4ever Dance Inc.<\/a>, which focuses on dance and music, and provides instruction to young people.\u00a0 \u00a0Connecting with their creativity helps to offset some of the challenges they face in everyday life.<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span>How about a quick rundown of your experiences in archives?<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela:\u00a0I\u2019m an archival technician here in <a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Langsdale Library<\/a>. I came to Special Collections as patron initially, looking for artifacts, and then became a volunteer, and enrolled in undergraduate classes here at UB. Eventually I became a student worker, and now i\u2019m full time staff.<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">What can folks expect to learn at the workshop?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela:\u00a0People can learn the importance of preservation and also learn certain processes they need in order to keep their photos and documentation for posterity. They will learn that archiving is an actual process. Also, we hope that this workshop will help Special Collections learn how we can better serve the community.<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Megan: I&#8217;m going to talk about the archival process, and not just preservation specifically.<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Why are community archives important?<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela: The media nowadays is notorious for using secondary sources, and the result has lead to what is commonly called \u201cfake news\u201d. But primary sources in archives don\u2019t lie.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">How does this relate to Special Collections\u2019 mission?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif\">Angela:\u00a0Everything about it relates to Special Collections\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/special-collections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purpose<\/a>.
