During the COVID-19 pandemic and campus closure throughout 2020 and spring 2021, <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ubalt.edu\/special-collections\/\">UBalt Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/a> shifted services online, focusing on digital projects and services for the research community. We began offering digitization on demand services while implementing new digital reference tools and workflows. Since beginning this service, we have served over 300 patron digitization requests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between 2020 and Fall 2021 we have also added access to digitized archival materials through our collections online finding aid database. We also created several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ubarchives.omeka.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">digital exhibits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ubarchives.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/baltimore-cultural-arts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Baltimore Cultural Arts Program, 1964-1993<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ubarchives.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/bettygarmanrobinson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Organization, Education and Empowerment: Betty Garman Robinson&#8217;s Activism in Baltimore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ubarchives.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/40-years-of-hiv-aids-in-baltim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">40 Years of HIV\/AIDS in Baltimore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This fall, Special Collections &amp; Archives reopened the Research Room for our researchers by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ubalt.libanswers.com\/specialcollections_archives\/faq\/314070\"><b>appointment<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During the past two months, we have already had a number of visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We hope you\u2019ll enjoy learning about a few of the projects we are excited to share with you this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/news\/topics\/american-archives-month\"><b>American Archives Month<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Digitization Project: Preserving and Providing Access to Baltimore Television News Station (WMAR), 1980-1985<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2108\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2108 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2019\/04\/20180919_141919-e1556294264368-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2019\/04\/20180919_141919-e1556294264368-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2019\/04\/20180919_141919-e1556294264368-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WMAR-TV Collection film reels at UBalt Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2021, <\/span><b>Fatemeh Rezaei<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, University Collections and AV Archivist, began a 12-month digitization project titled \u201cPreserving and Providing Access to Baltimore Television News Station (WMAR), 1980-1985\u201d after UBalt was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/news\/news-releases.cfm?id=3762\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awarded one of 17 CLIR grants for \u201cRecordings at Risk.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The project will digitize 975 U-matic tapes from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.ubalt.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/126\"><b>WMAR-TV Collection<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, spanning 1980-1985. After digitization, Fatemeh manages the digital preservation of the resulting digital files, and provides access to the video files through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/ublangsdale\"><b>Internet Archive<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fatemeh has already uploaded 500 video files to the Internet Archives, and will add even more before the end of December. This footage from WMAR-TV documents numerous historical events, cultural and racial issues, and political and social changes in the Baltimore region. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px;font-weight: 400\">Fatemeh plans to provide access to all of the digitized footage this Spring. Digital preservation of these materials will be an ongoing responsibility of the UBalt Special Collections &amp; Archives at the RLB Library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Community Archives Program and Inheritance Baltimore Partnership<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In September 2021, <\/span><b>Angela Koukoui<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Outreach and Public Services Coordinator, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/news\/news-releases.cfm?id=3818\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">began the UBalt-JHU Community Archives Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after two fellows were selected in August for the training fellowship portion of the program that will expose early career professionals of African\/Black descent to cultural heritage work. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3873\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3873\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3873 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1022\/2021\/10\/Community-ArchivesGroup.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo, left to right: Deyane Moses, Angela Koukoui, and Bria Warren.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Community Archives Program is a partnership between The University of Baltimore <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/library.ubalt.edu\/special-collections\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Special Collections &amp; Archives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Johns Hopkins University&#8217;s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.krieger.jhu.edu\/billie-holiday-project\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Billie Holiday Project for Liberation Arts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (BHPLA), which is supported by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inheritancebaltimore.jhu.edu\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Inheritance Baltimore: Humanities and Arts Education for Black Liberation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The Inheritance Baltimore effort, focused on humanities education and arts-based public engagement in Black Baltimore, is funded by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2021\/01\/14\/inheritance-baltimore-project-mellon-foundation-grant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$4.4 million Just Futures grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a part of the program, Angela, who co-leads the Community Archives Program, and the fellows <\/span><b>Deyane Moses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Bria Warren<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, have begun work at the UBalt Special Collections &amp; Archives with a portion of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.ubalt.edu\/repositories\/2\/resources\/99\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robert Breck Chapman Photographs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> archival collection focused on the history of the Cultural Arts Program (CAP) in Baltimore City. They have also begun collaborating with several community partners, including leading community archives workshops at the Eubie Blake Center and contributing to work with the AFRO Newspaper Archives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The University of Baltimore Stories: 100th Anniversary Oral History Project<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2021 also began <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archivesub.omeka.net\/exhibits\/show\/ub-stories--100th-anniversary-\/ub-stories--100th-anniversary-\"><b>The University of Baltimore Stories: 100th Anniversary Oral History Project<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In preparation for The University of Baltimore\u2019s centennial in 2025, Special Collections &amp; Archives is collecting and preserving the UBalt stories of alumni, staff members, and faculty members. The project is looking for more UBalt community members who fit the project scope and who are interested in sharing their stories for future generations.
