That the tension between these competing desires will not go away, they will always fight one another. This continues to be true, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/13\/technology\/aaron-swartz-internet-activist-dies-at-26.html?smid=pl-share\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Aaraon Swartz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, the young co-founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">reddit <\/a>found dead in his apartment on Friday, is yet another casualty in that conflict.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">To some degree this post is one of those tangential \u201cI was there\u201d articles that come up when some tragedy occurs. I was working on my Library Science masters degree in Boston, and had a staff position as the Stacks Manager for the Architecture and Urban Planning library at MIT, when Aaron <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/techblogs.mit.edu\/news\/2013\/01\/the-techs-coverage-of-aaron-swartz\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">hacked us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span> for a bunch of JSTOR articles. At the time the MIT libraries <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span>community<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span> seemed amused, and the vendor was <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/13\/technology\/aaron-swartz-internet-activist-dies-at-26.html?_r=0\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">satisfied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> when he turned the files over to them. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/friends-internet-law-experts-say-department-justices-treatment-aaron-swartz-was-unwarranted-1011514\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Department of Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20110719\/13282015167\/feds-charge-aaron-swartz-with-felony-hacking-downloading-ton-academic-research.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">however<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, went on to press charges. With an attitude characterized by some as a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20120917\/17393320412\/us-government-ups-felony-count-jstoraaron-swartz-case-four-to-thirteen.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">witch hunt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, they sustained pressure on Aaron Swartz for what amounted to exploiting a loophole to check out too many books. They continued until, just this past Friday, a truly great man <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/01\/13\/aaron-swartz-death-_n_2468879.html\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">took his life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> under the relentless threat of decades in prison.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Why call Aaron Swartz a great man? Among many other accomplishments, he helped invent the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rss\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">RSS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> protocol that brings you this blog, and updates many of your favorite websites. He, as mentioned above, helped found <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/redit.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">reddit.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, &#8220;the front page to the internet,&#8221; a site that even the President of the United States <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/IAmA\/comments\/z1c9z\/i_am_barack_obama_president_of_the_united_states\/\" target=\"_blank\">uses<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">. Aaron worked on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creative_Commons\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Creative Commons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> License that lets people freely share their artistic work while keeping their ownership of it. He also founded <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/demandprogress.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Demand Progress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, which galvanized the public to demand the defeat of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">SOPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">\/<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PROTECT_IP_Act\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">PIPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">, which would have hobbled how we share content on the internet.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">He also was a huge ally of libraries, someone who really got what we\u2019re about. Aaron was a <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/code4lib.conf.2008.pres.BuildingtheOpenLibrary\" target=\"_blank\">founding force<\/a> behind <\/span><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Library\">open access online library<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/openlibrary.org\/\"><span style=\"color: black\">Openlibrary.org<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">. One that sought to have a wiki page for every book, and share its data with anyone in the world. And he fought against the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/themoderatevoice.com\/173254\/jstor-the-biz-aaron-schwartz-allegedly-hacked\/#FycJK1R1TuV8ucQ8.30\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">great paywall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> database vendors put up to keep information out of the hands of the people who can use it, in favor of those who can pay for it.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Information wants to be free, because it\u2019s the nature of people to share. It also want to be expensive because individuals can make resources valuable by keeping them scarce. But you can help break that tension. If you are in the position to publish your research, think about making it available in an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_access\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\">Open Access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;vertical-align: baseline\"> forum or under a Creative Commons license.
