{"id":485,"date":"2011-09-19T14:12:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T14:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2011\/09\/19\/creator-of-world-wide-web-is-now-trying-to-measure-its-size\/"},"modified":"2018-07-18T21:29:46","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T21:29:46","slug":"creator-of-world-wide-web-is-now-trying-to-measure-its-size","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2011\/09\/19\/creator-of-world-wide-web-is-now-trying-to-measure-its-size\/","title":{"rendered":"Creator of World Wide Web is now trying to measure its size"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Will we ever know how many pages are on the World Wide Web?<\/p>\n<p>Google surpassed the trillion-page mark in its index three years ago (Google, 2008), and this doesn&#8217;t count the deep web that its search engine doesn&#8217;t index?<\/p>\n<p>With millions of bloggers, amateur videographers, photographers and other web authors adding content by the minute, is it possible to measure the ever-growing Web?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the man considered the creator of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee, is ready to try!  His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webfoundation.org\/\">World Wide Web Foundation<\/a> is launching a project called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webfoundation.org\/projects\/the-web-index\/\">World Wide Web Index<\/a> with a $1 million grant from Google (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webfoundation.org\/projects\/the-web-index\/\">World Wide Web Foundation, 2011<\/a>).  Its goal is to measure the size and impact of the Web in a series of annual reports.  The first report is scheduled for early 2012.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to follow this project to see if society can track the growth and development of the Web.
