I&#8217;m Pete Ramsey, one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/staff\/index.htm#reference\">Reference and Instruction Librarians<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/langsdale.ubalt.edu\/\">Langsdale Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This semester I&#8217;m teaching a section of IDIS 110 (Introduction to Information Literacy). Recently in class, I demonstrated how to create a &#8220;Mind Map&#8221; (sometimes called a &#8220;Concept Map&#8221;). A mind map is a way to brainstorm by visually organizing concepts around a central theme or idea. Here&#8217;s an example of a mind map outlining the different parts of a research paper:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_BaWbFC5UA2s\/TW0uVFnxmfI\/AAAAAAAAGfA\/Rw-Q_p2yL9U\/s912\/XmindExample.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;cursor: pointer;width: 499px;height: 142px\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/_BaWbFC5UA2s\/TW0uVFnxmfI\/AAAAAAAAGfA\/Rw-Q_p2yL9U\/s912\/XmindExample.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As someone who thinks better when I can include pictures and graphics alongside text, using mind maps has made me be a better planner and researcher. Besides planning, I also find myself taking meeting notes using mind maps. For me, it&#8217;s a way to quickly see the different parts of a problem, and then isolate the parts and deal with them individually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;cursor: pointer;width: 305px;height: 141px\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_BaWbFC5UA2s\/TW0JWHIrVTI\/AAAAAAAAGec\/XFr1qF8mC7w\/XmindLogo.JPG\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s easy enough to create a mind map with pen and paper, but there are some <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_concept_mapping_and_mind_mapping_software\">great<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dmoz.org\/Reference\/Knowledge_Management\/Knowledge_Creation\/Mind_Mapping\/Software\/\">programs<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mind-mapping.org\/\">available<\/a> if you\u2014like so many of us\u2014are permanently attached to your computer. The mind map above was created using a program called XMind, which can be downloaded free from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/\">http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/<\/a>. On the website, you can even browse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/share\/\">mind maps created by other <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmind.net\/share\/\">users<\/a>.
