{"id":75,"date":"2017-04-01T04:30:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-01T04:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2017\/04\/01\/check-out-a-librarian\/"},"modified":"2020-02-20T14:07:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T14:07:38","slug":"check-out-a-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2017\/04\/01\/check-out-a-librarian\/","title":{"rendered":"Check out a librarian!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Back in 1986, a librarian named Constance Mellon identified a problem she labeled as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/the-strange-affliction-of-library-anxiety-and-what-librarians-do-to-help\">Library Anxiety<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp; She noted that college students in particular were prone to being ashamed of their research skills to the point where they didn\u2019t want to ask for help.&nbsp; One can imagine that the rise of the internet did little to alleviate this problem.&nbsp; After all, no one wants to ask a question about something like library anxiety, only to get a link from <a href=\"http:\/\/lmgtfy.com\/?q=library+anxiety\">Let Me Google that For You<\/a> as a response.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-kkNyqM30aPw\/WNwzraUF-VI\/AAAAAAAAAlY\/B8mhPD-77I885rKx4vd7fn2H99T3QMEowCEw\/s1600\/Michael.png\" style=\"clear: right;float: right;margin-bottom: 1em;margin-left: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-kkNyqM30aPw\/WNwzraUF-VI\/AAAAAAAAAlY\/B8mhPD-77I885rKx4vd7fn2H99T3QMEowCEw\/s320\/Michael.png\" width=\"226\" \/><\/a>In order to address library anxiety, Langsdale has been working with students in UB\u2019s Information and Interaction Design, and Integrated Design programs to develop a Check Out a Librarian (COaL) app. This app makes talking with a librarian just as easy as finding a match on Tinder.&nbsp;To begin using COaL you will need to have a profile, but the app makes this easy by automatically pulling in your interests and reading habits from sites like Facebook and Goodreads.&nbsp; Once you have a profile, COaL will show you photos of librarians in your area who share similar reading habits.&nbsp; If you find a librarian that looks relatively unintimidating, just swipe right to indicate your interest.&nbsp; If the librarian swipes right back, the app will help you arrange a meeting with a librarian at a nearby independent bookstore or a caf\u00e9 with free wifi.<\/p>\n<p>So far, most the people beta testing the app say that it is really helpful for breaking the ice with librarians.&nbsp; One COaL user (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eileencook.com\/blog\/?page_id=2805\">Isobel, age 17<\/a>) indicated that she may even be able to approach one in the library now.&nbsp; \u201cLibrarians are like priests\u201d Isobel said.&nbsp; \u201cYou can tell them you want information on just about any subject and they never look at you weird. It&#8217;s like a rule or something.\u201d&nbsp; Many of our librarian participants benefit too, realizing that they can be themselves, even when not in a building with the word \u201clibrary\u201d etched over the entrance.&nbsp; As librarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/5618698-nice-girls-don-t-have-fangs\">Jane Jameson<\/a> put it \u201cYou can take the girl out of the library, but you can\u2019t take the neurotic, compulsively curious librarian out of the girl.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>In the future, we hope to expand the beta to more and more cities until it is available worldwide.
