{"id":82,"date":"2017-02-22T17:39:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T17:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2017\/02\/22\/libraries-as-radical-places\/"},"modified":"2018-07-18T21:27:44","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T21:27:44","slug":"libraries-as-radical-places","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/library\/2017\/02\/22\/libraries-as-radical-places\/","title":{"rendered":"Libraries as Radical Places"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2016 the Joint Chiefs of Storytime Underground, a collective of children&#8217;s librarians, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2016\/08\/opinion\/libraries-are-not-neutral-opinion\/\">stated<\/a> &#8220;Librarianship is not a neutral profession, and libraries are not neutral spaces.&#8221; This was specifically in response to criticisms of book displays related to the Black Lives Matter movement, but it also highlighted the ongoing role libraries play as champions for social justice, inclusiveness, and equal access.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hafuboti.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/lafe-truly-epic-english-3.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;margin-right: 1em\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/hafuboti.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/lafe-truly-epic-english-3.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Libraries haven&#8217;t always been inclusive spaces (see <a href=\"https:\/\/dp.la\/exhibitions\/exhibits\/show\/history-us-public-libraries\/segregated-libraries\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2016\/04\/library-card\/477162\/\">here<\/a>&nbsp;for examples), so groups like <a href=\"http:\/\/weneeddiversebooks.org\/\">We Need Diverse Books<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/critlib.org\/\">CritLib<\/a>, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rlc.radicallibrarianship.org\/\">Radical Librarians Collective<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.queeryparty.org\/\">Que(e)ry Librarians<\/a>&nbsp;bring awareness to social justice issues. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A group of librarians created a #LibrariesResist <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1g79sSAlP03rdiVHraeb9PFlhbL_5ZLVFFRYiOqhZs_w\/pub\">resource list<\/a> for information professionals and the public to promote &#8220;<span>free, unbiased and accessible sharing of all types of information.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Building a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LibrariesResist?src=hash\">#LibrariesResist<\/a> movement &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mISNobvRlC\">https:\/\/t.co\/mISNobvRlC<\/a> resource.
