This highly selective cohort of students work intensely over four semesters to build a revenue-generating business.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/2019\/06\/14\/global-business-challenges-yield-real-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Field Study to Finland<\/a> provided an excellent chance to utilize the knowledge and skills our Entrepreneurship Fellows are learning in the classroom and sharing the best practices they have unleased while launching their own startups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_793\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Kareema-Mclendon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-793\" class=\"wp-image-793 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Kareema-Mclendon-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kareema Mclendon\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Kareema-Mclendon-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Kareema-Mclendon.jpg 561w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Entrepreneurship Fellow, Kareema Mclendon<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Current E-Fellow, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kareemamclendon\/\">Kareema Mclendon<\/a> <\/strong>of Cohort 6 and founder of a wholesale bridal gown firm that specializes in designing gowns for women between the ages of 35-50, and <strong>James Gerst<\/strong>, B.S. \u201919, and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hooyostea.com\/\">Hooya\u2019s Tea Company<\/a>, both saw the Global Field Study course as a way to apply what they have learned in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>For Mclendon, who consulted for a lingerie company in the United Kingdom more than 16 years ago, she could relate to what she is going through with her business and what her assigned company Taiga Chocolate is going through as a startup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re starting a company, you sometimes feel you are alone in terms of feeling overwhelmed,\u201d said Mclendon. \u201cI learned that what I feel sometimes as an entrepreneur is universal after talking with a few of the companies\u2019 founders. My experiences in the Entrepreneurship Fellows program were extremely helpful when thinking about taking Taiga Chocolates to new markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mclendon credits <strong>Prof. David Lingelbach\u2019s<\/strong> entrepreneurship course about opportunity assessment and development which emphasizes effectual reasoning (Who am I? Who do I know? What do I know?) and concepts of effective communication and teamwork from <strong>Prof. Lisa Stickney\u2019s<\/strong> class in organizational behavior, with working with her teammates and putting forth a great presentation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_792\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/0524191333c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-792\" class=\"wp-image-792 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/0524191333c-e1560525258740-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"James Gerst\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/0524191333c-e1560525258740-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/merricktoday\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/0524191333c-e1560525258740-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>James Gerst, founder of Hooya&#8217;s Tea<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gerst was one of her Mclendon\u2019s teammates, and Cohort 5 graduate of E-Fellows program already had some experience working on case studies in other classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom my experiences at UB delving into a case study and putting one\u2019s self into the shoes of the decision-makers, I felt prepared on how to offer my research and advice,\u201d said Gerst. \u201cI\u2019m also fortunate to have been part of the E-Fellows program, where we became intimate with the startup process and what it takes to operate a lean business. It was an absolute pleasure to work with the Taiga team and my classmates from UB and I\u2019d encourage any student to consider enrolling in a UB Global Field Study.<\/p>\n<p>According to,<strong> Eusebio Scornavacca<\/strong>, Parsons Professor of Digital Innovation, the Entrepreneurship Fellows are a perfect fit for the Global Field Study based on real-life cases from start-ups around the world. In 2017, in collaboration with the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Scornavacca took 13 UB\u00a0students to work with entrepreneurs in Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Last year, he developed a case-based field study in collaboration with I\u00c9SEG School of Management in Paris, France.<\/p>\n<p>The <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubalt.edu\/merrick\/undergraduate-programs\/business-administration\/entrepreneurship-fellows\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ratcliffe Entrepreneurship Fellows program<\/a><\/u> is a four semester program embedded in the B.S. in Business Administration program. It provides a scholarship to each student in the program, covering all in-state tuition and fees, plus a stipend.
