Moxley, Nicole Hudgins, Monique Koch, and Marshall Odell in front of the White House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With a little help from the &#8220;inside&#8221;\u00a0(UB alum Jake Rotter, a White House intern), three UB History students and Professor Hudgins got on the list of visitors to tour the East Wing on Saturday, January 17.\u00a0 We all had to get security clearance beforehand and meet the Secret Service officers promptly at our 9:30am time slot on\u00a0what was thankfully a\u00a0sunny Saturday morning!\u00a0 The officers also act as stationed tour guides, answering visitors&#8217; questions about the Vermeil Room, the Blue Room, Red Room, Green Room, East Room, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Every room is filled with presidential\u00a0and first lady portraits, beautiful\u00a0period desks, and antique clocks, books, or figurines.\u00a0 Did you know that the First Lady need not be the president&#8217;s wife?\u00a0 A couple of our presidents were not married at the time of their administration, and chose a\u00a0woman to\u00a0be in charge of the White House social calendar!\u00a0\u00a0Professor Hudgins was also impressed with the array of beautiful chandeliers adorning the rooms.<\/p>\n<p>After a <em>latte<\/em> break nearby, our group headed to the White House Visitors Center, which is well-worth a visit.\u00a0 Formerly our national\u00a0Patent Library, this lovely\u00a0hall\u00a0is now full of interesting White House, presidential, and first lady facts and artifacts (don&#8217;t miss the video, broadcast\u00a0at the far end of the hall).\u00a0 Did you know that\u00a0Caroline Harrison used her influence to raise funds to establish the Johns Hopkins Medical School, on the condition that the school admit women?<\/p>\n<p>Some of us went on afterwards to Ben&#8217;s Chili Bowl on U Street (est. 1958), which was packed full of people lined up for Ben&#8217;s famous chili dogs and milkshakes.\u00a0 We agreed that this was the perfect cap to a fascinating day in D.C.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2015\/01\/East-Wing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-163\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2015\/01\/East-Wing.jpg\" alt=\"Shows cross-section of entire East Wing of the White House\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cross-section of the entire East Wing of the White House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a little help from the &#8220;inside&#8221;\u00a0(UB alum Jake Rotter, a White House intern), three UB History students and Professor Hudgins got on the list of visitors to tour the East Wing on Saturday, January 17.\u00a0 We all had to get security clearance beforehand and meet the Secret Service officers promptly at our 9:30am time &hellip;
