Robinson for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalhistory.uh.edu\/topic_display.cfm?tcid=101\" target=\"_blank\">the murder of New York prostitute Helen Jewett<\/a>. \u00a0Robinson&#8217;s first trial in 1836 also ended in his acquittal. The brutal\u00a0killing\u00a0of a beautiful and popular young woman and the trial of 19-year-old clerk Richard Robinson caused a sensation in a changing New York, a city filled with young people who had left rural communities to live unsupervised in the bustling metropolis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Students in &#8220;Everyday Lives,&#8221; Dr. Elizabeth Nix&#8217;s social history course, researched the historical figures from the 19th century that Patricia Cohen described in <em>The Murder of Helen Jewett<\/em>, and testified as th<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">ose people<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">\u00a0in class. Students had to stay <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/americanstatetri14laws\" target=\"_blank\">true to the facts <\/a>in the book, but the legal counsel had leeway to ask new questions and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">present\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">arguments the <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">historica<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">l\u00a0figures had not made.\u00a0<\/span>Our judge for the day, Dr. Darien Ripple, listened to the evidence, and like the rest of the class was surprised when the defense made the bold decision to put the accused himself on the stand. \u00a0At\u00a0the end of the\u00a0day, our judge agreed with his 19th century predecessor that too much\u00a0doubt existed to convict the &#8220;innocent boy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; On February 25, 2015 prosecutors once again failed to convict Richard P.
