Clare&#8217;s parlor where portraits are draped for the mourning period.<\/h6>\n<p>University of Baltimore history major Ashley Tippie has created a new exhibit at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountclare.org\/\">Mt. Clare Museum House<\/a>\u00a0 in Southwest Baltimore City. &#8220;Mt. Clare in Mourning&#8221; explores the ways that English colonists and enslaved African Americans marked the deaths of their loved ones in the 18th century. In the course of her research, Ashley and museum director\u00a0Rose\u00a0Gallenberger found\u00a0 a mourning ring that had been hidden in a ring box for generations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2017\/10\/20171007_144858.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-362\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2017\/10\/20171007_144858-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2017\/10\/20171007_144858-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2017\/10\/20171007_144858-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6>In preparing the house-wide exhibit, Ashley researched the mourning jewelry in Mt. Clare&#8217;s collection.<\/h6>\n<p>On October 7<i>\u00a0<\/i>Ashley led a tour she had developed\u00a0 that focussed on the material culture of death and dying in the colonial period. The exhibit runs from October 9 to October 29.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley is pursuing an undergraduate history degree with a specialization in public history. She is currently enrolled in Professor Josh Davis&#8217; course, <em>Introduction to Public History<\/em>.
