{"id":380,"date":"2018-02-08T19:28:31","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T19:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/?p=380"},"modified":"2018-02-08T19:28:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T19:28:31","slug":"baltimore-museum-of-industry-gives-ub-student-some-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/2018\/02\/08\/baltimore-museum-of-industry-gives-ub-student-some-sugar\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltimore Museum of Industry Gives UB Student Some Sugar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rita Davenport, a UB history major who completes the program this semester, is finishing on a high note with an internship at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebmi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baltimore Museum of Industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-379\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D-257x300.jpg 257w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D-768x897.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D-877x1024.jpg 877w, https:\/\/blogs.ubalt.edu\/nhudgins\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/207\/2018\/02\/Rita-D.jpg 2038w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Her main\u00a0project at the BMI is\u00a0documenting a backlog\u00a0of historical\u00a0objects.\u00a0 Recently, she has been using a database called Past Perfect\u00a0to catalog <a href=\"http:\/\/baltmusindustry.pastperfectonline.com\/webobject\/AFAA60B7-8896-4827-A370-749841559267\" target=\"_blank\">products<\/a> from Domino Sugar. \u00a0As we all know, Domino Sugar has played a huge role in Baltimore&#8217;s industry.<\/p>\n<p>Recently,\u00a0the museum received a donation of four larges boxes full of Domino Sugar products such as boxes, coffee creamer, cinnamon shakers, coffee mugs, plush animals, sugar cubes, water bottles, and hats.\u00a0 Rita\u00a0gave each of these objects a number, then\u00a0labeled them with the number somewhere on the bottom(so it doesn&#8217;t show on display).\u00a0\u00a0She used a special\u00a0archival pen.\u00a0\u00a0Rita says,\u00a0&#8220;I photograph all angles of each object.\u00a0 I then catalog each object with their number into our database&#8230; I upload a photo for each object and describe the object itself and its condition.&#8221;\u00a0 In that way, the material history of Domino Sugar can be preserved for future scholars.<\/p>\n<p>Rita finished the four boxes on Wednesday, February 7.\u00a0 This was her first completed task as\u00a0an intern\u00a0and she says she is\u00a0&#8220;thrilled to finally be working in the field.&#8221;\u00a0 In the fall, Rita heads to a graduate program in public history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rita Davenport, a UB history major who completes the program this semester, is finishing on a high note with an internship at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
