Time\u2019s Capsule<\/strong><\/div>\n
Daniel Pettee<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

This day\u2019s thought is prone to travel where<\/div>\n
the breezes rustle through the copse of trees<\/div>\n
that drop their curling, venous leaves<\/div>\n
like vanished dreams on the rippling stream<\/div>\n
below, around which squirrels scoot.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

She sits in silence on the redwood deck,<\/div>\n
Enveloped by the choiring of the birds,<\/div>\n
squinting in the waning sunlight,<\/div>\n
glancing sideways through the branches<\/div>\n
that twine like crafted wreaths…<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The tabby chatter-shivers as it sees<\/div>\n
the sparrows swooping downward to the feeders<\/div>\n
positioned like crossed stations all along<\/div>\n
the clutch of cantilevered decks<\/div>\n
skirting the woodland\u2019s angular edge…<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Late afternoon, and the red-bellied<\/div>\n
woodpecker revs his beak to tympani,<\/div>\n
spreading punctuation on the railings<\/div>\n
in his rhythmically relentless<\/div>\n
search for sustenance…<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The cat\u2019s shrill urgency, the graceful<\/div>\n
swoop and sweep of the birds,<\/div>\n
the woman\u2019s easy, errant mind \u2013<\/div>\n
all connect in that moment as the day\u2019s<\/div>\n
droll dialogues endure in solemn silence…<\/div>\n
