Drinking with Junkyard Dogs<\/h2>\n

The whiskey sweats evaporate
\nhang like a cloud above the bar.
\nThe room is a dog\u2019s mouth panting
\non his breath the scent of all he stole
\nfrom the table and dragged off to chew alone.<\/p>\n

You come here to see the void stare back.
\nPabst-eyed and ham steak cheeked
\nbelly up with the other goldfish in the stein.
\nThe second hand of the clock cannot make it
\nto the top of the hour. It just twitches
\nlike a dying roach leg between future and past.<\/p>\n

The intimacy of the bartender\u2019s thumbprint
\non your glass and your lips pressed
\nagainst his flesh map. The beer is cold,
\nthe affect is warm, and you settle your neck
\nawry, to fit the skew of the formica walls.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the pleasure you deserve: a candy bar
\neaten in the bathroom when you\u2019re on a diet
\nthe stink sinking into the creamy nougat
\nIt\u2019s the judgement everyone assumes:
\nwhen anyone picked from the lineup is guilty
\nof something else anyway.<\/p>\n

There are no windows, and nobody knows
\nif it\u2019s so nobody can see in, or so nobody
\ncan see out. There is nothing outside the bar.
\nA muffler shop closed for the evening.
\nA doberman yawning behind a rusty fence
\nand everything else that grinds its teeth on metal
\nat day and stands on four legs at night.<\/p>\n
