So How Come I’m Not Happy by Lolo Gem<\/p><\/div>\n

my crayola markers may just outlive me<\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

i\u2019ve \u00a0 still \u00a0 got \u00a0 a<\/p>\n

g i a n t<\/b>\u00a0 stash\u00a0 of<\/p>\n

grade school markers<\/p>\n

that\u00a0 haven\u2019t\u00a0 dried<\/p>\n

up\u00a0 despite\u00a0 no\u00a0 use<\/p>\n

in\u00a0 ten\u00a0 plus\u00a0 years<\/p>\n

but \u00a0 my-oh-my \u00a0 i<\/p>\n

could never say the<\/p>\n

same\u00a0 about\u00a0 me.\u00a0 i<\/p>\n

sure\u00a0 as\u00a0 hell\u00a0 can\u2019t<\/p>\n

stay\u00a0 wet\u00a0 like\u00a0 that,<\/p>\n

can never be ready<\/p>\n

(with \u00a0 no<\/b> \u00a0 notice)<\/p>\n

the\u00a0 second\u00a0 some-<\/p>\n

one\u00a0 rips\u00a0 my\u00a0 pants<\/p>\n

off \u00a0 like \u00a0 popping<\/p>\n

a\u00a0 plastic\u00a0 cap\u00a0 off<\/p>\n

&\u00a0 by \u00a0 the \u00a0 by,\u00a0 i<\/p>\n

thought \u00a0 coloring<\/p>\n

was meant to soothe<\/p>\n

the\u00a0 mind.\u00a0 so\u00a0 why<\/p>\n

on \u00a0 earth \u00a0 is \u00a0 this<\/p>\n

dumb nonsense all<\/p>\n

i can think about?<\/p>\n

they\u2019re\u00a0 so\u00a0 broad<\/p>\n

& so bright\u2014a god-<\/p>\n

damn\u00a0 rainbow\u00a0 in a<\/p>\n

box, & i\u2019m just (me):<\/p>\n

a plain jane\u00a0 wishing<\/p>\n

she \u00a0 could \u00a0 spread<\/p>\n

herself \u00a0 on \u00a0 paper,<\/p>\n

leave \u00a0 b o l d<\/b> \u00a0 lines<\/span><\/p>\n

squiggles~&~swirls!<\/p>\n

markers & me don\u2019t<\/p>\n

age the same but one<\/p>\n

thing\u2019s \u00a0 for \u00a0 certain\u2014<\/p>\n

only a matter of time<\/p>\n

before i myself<\/p>\n

mummify &<\/p>\n

s o m e o n e<\/p>\n

scraps me<\/p>\n

like an<\/p>\n

empty<\/p>\n

husk<\/p>\n

Lolo Gem<\/strong> is a Baltimore-based painter creating whimsical, dreamlike worlds with deceptively seductive colors and forms. Gem personifies complex anxieties, fears, and ambiguous sensations into a cast of endearingly gloomy characters and animated objects. Employing a visual language rooted in vintage animation and comics, her work provides an immediate sense of familiarity and nostalgia, while abstracting the familiar and providing new, unexpected context. Her process is a fluid exchange between impulsive childlike interruptions and subsequent responses. Areas composed of acrylic paint and drawing materials are continuously built up then promptly broken down, resulting in playful coexistence of indecisive marks and tight, resolved elements. Gem\u2019s work embraces a childlike innocence and aims to provide an accessible entryway into the human psyche through the lens of a feverish childhood dream.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
