 <\/p>\n

The sweat between her thighs
\nsmells like copper.<\/p>\n

Cicadas live off the root
\nand are gone by August,
\nbut their needful noises
\nhaunt the trees for months.
\nCan sound get stuck in
\nleaves?<\/p>\n

I’m amazed, constantly,
\nat how little I understand of
\nhow these things work.<\/p>\n

Do I kiss first, the petals of
\nyour lips? Can soft slide
\nagainst soft? At night I think
\nof marking you with lipstick
\nand feathers. By morning
\nI am straightened out.<\/p>\n

Turn me the wrong way round
\nagain. I will wait until August
\nclinging to your roots.<\/p>\n

Christine Davis<\/b> is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where she lives with her husband, Justin, and their children, Jett and Cadence. She moonlights as an instructor at Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth.
