 <\/p>\n

Your teeth glinted bright in the dark,
\na perfect straight row of bleach-white
\nivory, small and sharp.<\/p>\n

We sat in the shadows and peered into the
\ndepths of the inner workings of the universe,
\nsaw neutrons and protons and electrons spin-
\nning around each other, an endless dizzying
\ndance to the relentless hum of the galaxy.<\/p>\n

We measured:
\nthe emptiness of space,
\nthe blinding of light,
\nthe speed of our hearts
\ngoing thump-thump-thump.<\/p>\n

In those days, the polar vortex was just
\nreaching DeKalb County. The air was so<\/p>\n

cold, they said, your lungs would dry out
\nand you would become a corpse standing
\nin the snow, eyes wide, reflecting the sun.
\nWe draped heavy blankets over doorways,
\npushed sickly sweet pieces of kettle corn
\ninto our mouths, and listened to the news.<\/p>\n

Black inferometers, mirrors on mirrors on
\nmirrors, diffraction gratings with slits so tiny
\nwe could only dream it in the abstract.<\/p>\n

Radiation sources, heated filaments, boiled
\nelectrons. We hooked up anodes and
\nammeters, fuses and diodes, capacitors
\nwith infinite potential. Split light into a
\nthousand wavelengths and beheld its beauty.<\/p>\n

The storm raged on outside.<\/p>\n

Isabelle Ylo<\/strong> grew up and currently resides in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She received a bachelor’s in chemistry from Northern Illinois University, and a master’s in teaching chemistry from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has a pet bunny named Boe.<\/p>\n

Edward Michael Supranowicz<\/b> is the grandson of Irish and Russian\/Ukrainian immigrants. He grew up on a small farm in Appalachia. He has a grad background in painting and printmaking. Some of his artwork has recently or will soon appear in <\/span>Fish Food<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Streetlight<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Another Chicago Magazine<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Door Is A Jar<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Phoenix<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>The Harvard Advocate<\/span><\/i>. Edward is also a published poet who has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize multiple times.<\/span><\/p>\n
