PROTECTIVE: A SONG FOR MIXED GIRL HAIR<\/b><\/h1>\n

Daniela Paraguya Sow<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A woman exclaims in Spanish over my daughter\u2019s hair,<\/span><\/p>\n

asks if she can touch it. <\/span>No, you cannot touch her hair,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and no guilt flutters. When strangers see black\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and mixed girls near, they want to caress their hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To freshen the mane: first I spritz water all around.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soft brown ringlets, Daddy\u2019s pick will fro out the hair\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and it\u2019s maybe the first thing anyone notices about her.<\/span><\/p>\n

In line at a pizzeria, a white woman stares at her hair,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

thinks no one is looking, can\u2019t help herself, reaches out<\/span><\/p>\n

with a hand to tousle our girl\u2019s curls. <\/span>Stop with the hair<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

touching, <\/span><\/i>I want to shout. Boundaries: why broken\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

so often? This girl knows she can say <\/span>my hair<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

is a part of my body\u2013please don\u2019t touch.<\/span><\/i> Some days she asks<\/span><\/p>\n

me to twist the frontal strands, bobby-pin back her hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Other days, she loops on a colorful stretchy headband,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

or goes for an oversized, flashy bow. Most days, her hair<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

is natural, just the way she likes it, framing and shading<\/span><\/p>\n

her beautiful brown face. She grins,<\/span> I love my hair.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I celebrate with her, though I am still detangling\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

people\u2019s hands from this mixed girl\u2019s hair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nataliia Burmaka<\/b> was born 1 October, 1978. She graduated from Boris Danchenko\u2019s National Studio of Fine Arts (Sumy, Ukraine) in 1999 and had been working as an artist designer from 1999 till 2005 . Later she made illustrations for books and worked together with her husband creating murals (private orders). After Russia invaded Ukraine in February, 2022 her family made a decision to emigrate from Sumy. By coincidence she and her family got temporary protection in Finland.
