ICY IN SPOTS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pamela Nocerino<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Red neon blinks like it celebrates the danger,<\/span><\/p>\n

and we take it, as tradition dictates, as a triple dare<\/span><\/p>\n

to trundle out with calendars as stuffed as our bellies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The car warms, and one of us begins the annual tale<\/span><\/p>\n

of sliding tires, in a spinning car, before seatbelts, when I70 was only two lanes<\/span><\/p>\n

and Grandma folded her body around the tin of her powdered pecan cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing was broken!\u201d we all yell together,<\/span><\/p>\n

referring to bones and cookies, but not in that order.<\/span><\/p>\n

The person holding this year\u2019s batch feels the weight of their responsibility,<\/span><\/p>\n

and repositions the old tin for the fifth time on their lap as the car pulls out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The details slip with each retelling.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not always Grandma who protects the cookies,<\/span><\/p>\n

but it is always those cookies.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the ending still keeps us on the road\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing is broken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
