tears of the kingdom<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

in this realm, the kings do not cry\u2014
<\/span>that would be giving us something real.\u00a0
<\/span>this is not <\/span>the legend of zelda<\/span><\/i>. the tears\u00a0
<\/span>of the kingdom do not trickle down\u00a0
<\/span>to form wells of mirth and memory.\u00a0
<\/span>my lover does not watch over me
<\/span>like a light dragon above the ridge.
<\/span>instead, we plead with rulers
<\/span>who mistake themselves for gods,
<\/span>ask for crumbs off their crisp linen
<\/span>tablecloths. tell me, why do i scrape
<\/span>twelve grand off my paychecks
<\/span>when bezos doesn\u2019t pay taxes?
<\/span>why do we the people never have
<\/span>enough money, but when we question\u00a0
<\/span>how musk earned his, we\u2019re told
<\/span>he earned it<\/span><\/i>\u2014the sentence ends there.
<\/span>no mention of the labor margins,
<\/span>the ruptured backs of workers.
<\/span>we stare into the blood moon
<\/span>and watch the monsters we already
<\/span>killed multiply in the night. sand
<\/span>descends on gerudo town. sludge
<\/span>fills in the ponds of mipha court.
<\/span>goron city is overtaken by capitalism
<\/span>and prime rock roast. the rito
<\/span>are freezing. the powers that be
<\/span>can only see the kingdom through
<\/span>the clouds, but it means they can\u2019t\u00a0
<\/span>see us gather in the forest, lying\u00a0
<\/span>in wait for our time to strike.<\/span><\/p>\n

Patrice Sullivan lives and works in Phoenix, AZ. Sullivan had taught painting for 25 years at Colorado State University. She received BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and her MFA from University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally. Her work is about memory and family.  Although she works from photographs, the paintings are not photorealism.  The paint itself, with its restive and gestural surfaces, embodies the memory with which she sees the past.
