 <\/p>\r\n

Obligations<\/strong><\/h1>\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n

Unsettled, we described him,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

cousin Sam fresh out of Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He shucked his uniform,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

disparaged military obligation,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

swore he\u2019d never again be obliged.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Soon took off for parts unknown,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

no cards, no calls.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n

He passed through twenty years ago<\/span><\/p>\r\n

and saw nothing was the same<\/span><\/p>\r\n

as he remembered.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Said he might as well be a stranger<\/span><\/p>\r\n

somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

 <\/p>\r\n

Body or bones, he\u2019d be eighty now \u2013<\/span><\/p>\r\n

probably rootless, homeless, friendless,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

but without obligation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
