Beneath, the body sinks, skin pressed\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

by weightless dark. Fins flick and fold.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>scatter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bubbles swell,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>shiver,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>scatter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regulator hisses, holds,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>scatter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Water whispers, a hum over bone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fingers brush cold,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>slick rock,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

grains of salt sliding between nails,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

currents curling like a slow exhale.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Muffled thuds echo from the deep\u2014\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blood thickens,<\/span><\/p>\n

veins tighten like wire.<\/span><\/p>\n

A pulse stutters,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 falters,<\/span><\/p>\n

as nitrogen knots in muscle,<\/span><\/p>\n

turning sinew to lead.<\/span><\/p>\n

gasping,<\/span><\/p>\n

desperate,<\/span><\/p>\n

Bubbles climb,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

toward a surface that isn’t there\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

they pop like distant snaps of bone,<\/span><\/p>\n

sharp,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

cracking the quiet.<\/span><\/p>\n
