A man behind us discussed an article he\u2019d read in the latest\u00a0<em>Reader\u2019s Digest<\/em>, and as the man explained that the secret to looking younger was drinking cucumber water, I took the spoon from my plate and tapped the spoon in my palm.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cDeaf?\u201d I asked Madison.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cDeaf,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019ve heard what I said. You can hear me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI have my hearing aids in. Yes, I heard.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She stabbed her fork in a cherry tomato. It sprayed red juice on the table, and the spoon in my palm drummed a theme-song I knew from a sitcom. She sank the ripe, round tomato in a puddle of ranch.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have to see each other again,\u201d she told me. \u201cI understand that it\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>I stung the skin of my palm with the tapping. She liked Terrence Malick movies and rode her bicycle in the city. She talked about things like moral relativism and biodiversity and said that if she could go anywhere in the world, she\u2019d go to New Caledonia to look at flowers and birds. Her smile was warm, and she liked to go camping.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cThis is nice,\u201d I told Madison.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cYes, this is nice.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She ate the last dripping pieces of lettuce.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cThey have great steaks here,\u201d I told her. \u201cDo you want to get steaks?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a vegan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\r\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"center\"} --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>We rode our bikes on the weekend. She had a basket on her handlebars\u2014a white wicker basket that held a raincoat, her keys, and a bike-lock\u2014and when she pedaled the bike, her housekeys jangled and bounced.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re like a bell,\u201d I said. \u201cThey tell when you\u2019re coming. People walking before you know you\u2019re headed their way. They hear your keys.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cHere comes Madison! Run!\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>We rode a trail by the side of the river. We cycled along the paved paths of a park at the trail-end, and she rode faster than I did, and I couldn\u2019t keep up. I looked at runners and chipmunks and at geese by the pond, and when a fox in the forest watched the Canada geese, I called to Madison.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cLook! See the fox?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>It started raining that day. She was ready. She stopped beneath a maple tree, and in the dry grass underneath the limbs and the leaves, she put the rain jacket on and zipped her keys in her pocket. My clothes were wet from the rain.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She said: \u201cYou couldn\u2019t keep up.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI saw a fox,\u201d I said.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cIn the forest. I tried to tell you. I called.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t hear you,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to hear when there\u2019s someone behind me. I hear you best when you face me\u2014when I see what you say.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI need to face you,\u201d I said to her. Got it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She kissed my cheek.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cGood. You\u2019re learning. And they stare, and they whisper and laugh.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She put her hearing aids on the nightstand. The moment she turned away from me\u2014before she could fall asleep\u2014I whispered: \u201cI like you, Madison. I like being with you.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Her hair was down, and it covered her pillow. It hid her ears. When I came to her house, she wore white socks and a bathrobe.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to wear,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI doubt they\u2019ll care what you wear. Wear that robe.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cBut I want them to like me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI know they\u2019ll like you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She chose dark jeans and a cable-knit sweater. She bowled a 187, and between turns she talked to Holly about the wage gap. She split a pitcher with Mark. Whitney wanted to know where the sweater was from, and when Madison bowled her third strike:<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cWe like her,\u201d Holly told me. \u201cShe\u2019s smarter than the women you usually date.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cAnd she\u2019s nicer,\u201d said Whitney. \u201cShe\u2019s sweet.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She used a child\u2019s violet ball and spun the ball down the lane. We bowled a second game also, but Whitney had to get home because her mother was watching her children. We said goodbye to my friends, and I drove Madison home.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cThey liked you,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cDid they really?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cThey did.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI liked them, too. She held a pillow against her chest.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing that,\u201d she told me. \u201cI\u2019m not teaching you sign language.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI want to learn it,\u201d I said. \u201cLearn it why, though? I can translate.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cTeach me two or three things. There were plants in every windowsill, and there were plants on the table. She\u2019d studied botany in college, and she worked for a florist.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe do arrangements,\u201d she told me. \u201cLots of weddings. Lots of funerals.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She had a vase of daisies on her nightstand. The flowers were wilted and browning, and when I reached for the vase, she told me:\u00a0\u201cLeave them alone.\u201d \u201cBut they\u2019re dying, I said. See? They\u2019re brown.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>She turned the vase, and her lamp lit a blossom.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cI bring them home when they\u2019re dying. They were meant to be seen, and they were beautiful once. They were blooming. No one bought them or saw them. Soon I\u2019ll throw them away. She brought a vase to my apartment, and when we made dinner together, we had flowers on the table. Petals dropped from the blooms, and when they fell, I collected them. I kept a box of lost petals in the back of the fridge behind some Cokes and a bottle of mustard. I kept her petals, her vase, and her notes.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><em>I thought about what you said<\/em>, she wrote,\u00a0<em>and you\u2019re absolutely right. Mountains are better than beaches because there aren\u2019t any sharks. But if there were sharks on mountains, beaches would be a thousand times better.<\/em> Those were the kinds of notes she gave me. If you don\u2019t want to go, we\u2019ll stay in.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>I waited for her in the living room. Dismal daises in a windowsill wilted and drooped, and when she came from the shower in her terrycloth robe, she told me:\u00a0\u201cI made other plans tonight.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand,&#8221; I told her. \u201cWe said we\u2019d go to the art museum.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>\u201cI know that we said that. I thought about calling her or about visiting her at the flower shop, but I went to the grocery store instead and filled my freezer with meat. I opened windows and listened for birdsongs. I heard machinery. Pile drivers. Trucks. Last February, a deaf man moved into my apartment building. He has red hair and always wears a stocking cap, and when I see him in the hallway or at the mailboxes by the door, I sign to him, and he signs back to me.\u00a0<em>How are you?<\/em> we ask one another. <em>Seen any good movies lately?
