Building Support, Belonging, and Career Readiness
Creating a learning environment where everyone feels safe, seen, and supported starts with us. At UBalt, we are committed to fostering an inclusive space where diversity is celebrated, and every individual can thrive. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help us build this kind of environment.
The BEST Initiative (Bystander Education, Support, and Training) is one such resource. It equips faculty, staff, and students with the skills to be effective bystanders, empowering our community to act when needed and contribute to a culture of respect. Engaging with the training and resources offered through BEST helps ensure that everyone at UBalt feels they belong.
In addition, UBalt’s training and development programs through the Office of Human Resources provide opportunities to deepen your understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. From instructor-led workshops to online courses, these resources offer valuable insights on cultural competence, inclusive leadership, and more. Consider how these offerings can support you in creating a welcoming classroom for all students this semester.
Finally, supporting students in their career development is another vital part of fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. The Career & Internship Center (CIC) is hosting a Fall Career Fair on September 11 from 3:30 to 6:00 PM in the Student Center, where students can connect with employers from the DMV area. To help students prepare, the CIC is also hosting Career Week on September 3-4, offering access to the Career Closet for professional attire. These initiatives are essential in helping students feel prepared and confident as they step into their professional futures.
We all play a part in making UBalt a place where everyone can show up as their true selves. Let’s make this school year one where every student feels safe and seen in your classroom and beyond.
