From the President

As an eventful 2018 draws to a close, I see the University of Baltimore as an institution with a mandate. While the face of higher education is changing at a breathtaking pace―with a greater emphasis on career preparation; more choices in online classes; higher expectations for learning outcomes, and more―UB is embracing these transitions from a position of strength.

Our mandate stems from a fundamental truth about the institution: UB is a campus that has played a crucial role in the community throughout its 93-year history. It has been and continues to be a determined, vibrant place, ready to embrace even larger responsibilities―educational, civic, and cultural―as time marches on. Higher education is evolving, and we along with it. But our mandate remains. It calls on us to deliver something that the University has in abundance: champions. People all across Baltimore are championing UB. And, of course, we always have been the Champions of the City.

The videos we’re presenting for the 2018 UB Foundation’s Annual Report fit this theme nicely. Our stories show just how closely the institution is aligned with Baltimore, as it works on issues old and new. We never give less than our best to these efforts―our high-achieving students, our groundbreaking faculty, and our well-positioned and impressively experienced alumni. As you will see, we’re also making it a priority to move forward, both as a campus and a community: We offer assistance to tomorrow’s college students, we take on tough problems, and we ensure that the greater public has access to our tremendous resources for information and enlightenment.

I believe that not only Baltimore, but the state, the region and the nation are incredibly fortunate to have UB as a reliable partner. Our community―thousands of students, hundreds of educators, and more than 50,000 active alumni―form the basis of this relationship. And you, our loyal supporters, are a major part of this endeavor.

Your insights, your contributions and your commitment heighten the impact of UB’s can-do spirit in countless ways. The University’s mission, its mandate―all of it works together, thanks to your support. I consider all of us to be part of the same team.

It’s true that champions are never champions on their own. They find their place, they join a larger effort, and they make great things happen. At UB, we are tenacious. We change lives. You are right there with us in these efforts. Together, we are the Champions of the City.

Thank you. Please enjoy this year’s report.

Sincerely,

Kurt L. Schmoke
UB President

From the Board Chair

It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors this past year. This has been an exciting year as we move forward as an institution.

I know I speak for the entire University of Baltimore Foundation board when I say thank you for your dedication and support. We are very fortunate to have such committed friends and alumni who believe in the mission of the University of Baltimore.

It is important to remember that your generous support directly impacts our students as well as the greater Baltimore community. Initiatives such as the College Readiness Academy provide Baltimore City students with the foundation they need to be successful in college, while The Bob Parsons Veterans Advocacy Clinic trains the next generation of attorneys and provides pro bono legal services to veterans in the Baltimore region. In addition, your support has allowed us to complete a state of the art renovation of the Robert L. Bogomolny Library.

We are truly excited about the energy and enthusiasm that is present at UB and we are pleased to share more about these important initiatives in this year’s annual report.

As we look to the year ahead we must remember that the University of Baltimore’s greatest assets are its exceptional students and faculty as well as its committed alumni and friends.

We will continue to be the premier university for working adults who are striving for professional success. And with your support, we will work to ensure that the University of Baltimore remains the exceptional institution it has been for nearly a century.

Sincerely,

R. Thomas Crawford, M.B.A. ’91
Chair, UB Foundation Board of Directors
