New faculty book recommendation

Book: Room: A novel

Author: Emma Donoghue

Reviewer: Betsy Nix, College of Arts and Sciences

The premise of this book sounds terrible–a mother and son trapped for years in an 11×11 room by a kidnapper. But that’s not really what it is about. It is about motherhood and the world children create and understandings of happiness. It would be a great companion to Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom. The characters in Room have no freedom, but they find ways to cope.
I listened to this work as an audiobook because I was going on a long trip. The audio version is like a radio play, and I would highly recommend it.
