3. FREE Screening of The Right to Read, produced by LeVar Burton (Thursday February 1)

Come to the RLB Library on Thursday February 1 for a FREE screening of “The Right To Read.”

This documentary, executive produced by Levar Burton, “shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.”

Not knowing how to read is a pipeline to homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, and other conditions that disproportionately affect people of color and historically underserved communities. The ability to read, and the need for better reading instruction, can be “one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time.”

Watch the trailer. For your reference, here is a discussion guide. Free popcorn will be available!

  • When: Thursday February 1, 4:00 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. In-person
Where: RLB Library, Room 412, 4th floor

4. Creative Blocks Exhibition

Stop by the exhibition Creative Blocks on the first floor of the Library. CREATIVE BLOCKS celebrates the history of graphic design by showing how design trends and styles have influenced Baltimore’s history. The undergraduate and graduate students of Professor Lauren Smedley’s History of Graphic Design course (University of Baltimore, Fall 2023) curated a collection of artifacts to reveal how the dual histories of Baltimore and graphic design are intertwined. The collection is as diverse as the city it represents — logos, posters, signage, typography, publications and ephemera that have been created to promote the institutions that make up Charm City. To develop the collection, each student was tasked with identifying and researching a Baltimore-related artifact that they wished to honor as part of the canon of Baltimore graphic design history. Each student chose an artifact that appealed to their individual interest, meaning this exhibit not only documents Baltimore’s design history but provides insights into the current interests of UBalt design students.

To view the exhibition online, see this blog post!

  • When: All week and until February 8
    Where: RLB Library, 1st floor
