Fellowship Opportunity: Archival Research on Structural Inequality

The University of Baltimore Langsdale Library is pleased to announce a research fellowship program, funded by the University of Baltimore Foundation’s Fund for Excellence. The fellowship program will support archival research on structural inequality in Baltimore, to be conducted in Langsdale Library Special Collections. Two fellows will be selected to conduct research projects in the summer of 2016. These competitively awarded fellowships will provide a stipend of $2,000 a month for up to 2.5 months, between June and August 2016.

Upon completion of the summer program, fellows will be asked to present their work at a public colloquium organized by Langsdale Library, as well as submit a copy of their research product to the Library for permanent retention in Special Collections. The purpose of the research fellowship program is three-fold: to contribute to the current discourse regarding race and inequality, both locally and nationally; to promote engaged scholarship on Baltimore; and to demonstrate the value of public archives in formulating strategies to meet the challenges of the present.

The fellowship program is envisioned as a research opportunity for scholars regardless of academic discipline. Graduate students, faculty, and independent researchers are encouraged to apply. Priority consideration will be given to UB graduate students. A selection committee of archivists and scholars will select fellowship recipients from the pool of applicants annually.

The selection committee will review applications based on the following criteria:

• Completeness of the application and quality of all component materials
• Originality and creativity of the research proposal
• Articulation of a clear connection between the research proposal and the study of structural inequality in Baltimore
• A proposal that identifies information resources in Langsdale Special Collectionsrelevant to the proposed research
• A proposal that clearly states what research product will be produced by the completion of the fellowship program (for example, an article for publication, a doctoral prospectus, a public history website, etc.)

The application deadline is March 31, 2016.  The essentials needed to apply are:

1. The application form (available for PDF download here)
2. A research proposal of no more than 500 words
3. A current resume or curriculum vitae
4. Two letters of recommendation.

Please email all required application materials electronically to Langsdale Library Special Collections: specialcollections@ubalt.edu. Send all files as email attachments in PDF or MS Word formats. Applicants will receive a confirmation email when materials are received. Good luck!
